Great Expectations

on August 15, 2013

We all have expectations of ourselves and others. Because I am married to a pastor, some (including myself!) might have great(er) expectations for me, my husband, and my children. It is easy to live every day “in the fishbowl” under the bondage of others’ expectations. Yet I must remind myself consistently that I should only live under God’s expectations–truly GREAT expectations! What does God expect of me? When a lawyer asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was, Jesus answered,

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt 22:37-39).

If I am living every day under God’s expectations,  if I am truly fulfilling this command, as James 2:8 says, I am “doing well.”
